Ponnu

In English

In Tamil, "pon" means gold. "Ponnu" means a daughter. Almost the same word… but not the same respect. At the wedding, the question everyone asked: "How many sovereigns of gold are you giving?" Appa took a loan on the house. Amma pawned her thaali. Not one person asked: "Is the girl happy?" Sending a girl off loaded with gold is not a marriage. The daughter herself is the gold.

What the film shows

A bride sits on one pan of a brass balance while coins, appa's house and amma's thaali pile onto the other; her tear starts the beam back, and on the last 'pon' her side slams down and she glows gold.

How it was made

Sujal recorded the voice himself, on his phone, in Tamil; there is no AI voice. The picture was drawn in code with Claude, in the Watercolour Brush style of the Lemo-Opuscar film library, on one PC above our shop in Vaniyambadi.
