Comedy Piece: எல்லாரையும் சிரிக்க வைப்பவன், உள்ளே pieces-ஆ

In Tamil slang, "piece" means a person, a character: "avan oru comedy piece" is the friend who keeps the whole group laughing. In English a piece is also a broken bit. Sujal’s film puts the two together: the one who makes everyone laugh is not just a piece; inside, he is in pieces.

In English

There's this one guy in our group. We all call him the "comedy piece". "Piece" has two meanings. One, a character. Two, a broken bit. Whoever is feeling low, he's the one who makes them laugh. Even when I had my breakup, he told jokes all night until I fell asleep. One day I went to his room without telling him. The light was off. On his phone, a voice note from his amma: "When are you coming home, da?" He… was crying. The one who makes everyone laugh isn't a "piece". Broken inside… he's in pieces.

What the film shows

A smiling comedy mask over the gang on a terrace; in his dark room the funny friend cries over his amma's voice note, and the mask cracks and bursts into hanging pieces.

How it was made

Sujal recorded the voice himself, on his phone, in Tamil; there is no AI voice. The picture was drawn in code with Claude, in the Watercolour Brush style of the Lemo-Opuscar film library, on one PC above our shop in Vaniyambadi.
