அண்ணா, அன்னம்: ஒரு எழுத்து வித்தியாசம், ஒரு வாழ்க்கை வித்தியாசம்

அண்ணா என்றால் மூத்த சகோதரன் (elder brother). அன்னம் என்றால் சோறு, உணவு (cooked rice); அன்னப் பறவை (swan) என்றும் பொருள். இரண்டுக்கும் ண, ன என்ற ஒரு எழுத்துதான் வேறுபாடு. படத்தின் கடைசி வரி: எங்கள் வீட்டில் இன்று அன்னம் இருக்கிறதென்றால், அதன் பெயர் அண்ணா.

In English

In Tamil, between "anna" (big brother) and "annam" (rice) there's just one letter of difference. But in our house, that difference is a whole life. When appa fell ill, anna was seventeen. School first in tenth standard. He folded his college form, put it in his pocket, and went to work at the mill. I finished engineering. Our little sister is studying MBBS now. But… not one person asked him: "What did you want to become, anna?" If there's rice in our house today, its name is anna.

What the film shows

அண்ணா over அன்னம்; a 17-year-old school topper folds his college form into his pocket, a spinning mill is painted around him, threads run to his siblings' graduation cap and stethoscope, and rice on a banana leaf slides into the word அண்ணா.

How it was made

Sujal recorded the voice himself, on his phone, in Tamil; there is no AI voice. The picture was drawn in code with Claude, in the Watercolour Brush style of the Lemo-Opuscar film library, on one PC above our shop in Vaniyambadi.
