படி: ஒரு சொல், மூன்று பொருள், ஒரு அப்பா

படி என்ற ஒரே சொல்லுக்குப் பல பொருள் உண்டு. பெயர்ச்சொல்லாக: படிக்கட்டு (step), அரிசி, நெல் அளக்கும் அளவை (ஒரு படி அரிசி), நகல் (copy). வினைச்சொல்லாக: கல்வி கற்றல், வாசித்தல் (“நீ படி”). ஒரே தொடரில்: “ஒரு படி அரிசிக்காக உழைத்த அப்பா ‘நீ படி’ என்றார்; நான் ஒவ்வொரு படியாக ஏறினேன்.” இந்தப் படம் மூன்று பொருளையும் ஒரு அப்பாவிடம் சேர்க்கிறது.

In English

"Padi" has three meanings in Tamil. All three… are my father. A padi (measure) of rice. "Padi" as in study. A step to climb up. My father worked in the hot sun for even one measure of rice. He told me just once: "Study." I studied. I came up, step by step. But… the man who made me study… …can't read. Every step I climbed… …was his back.

What the film shows

One continuous ink line draws படி, a hot sun, a father bowed under it, a padi of rice, a school book and a staircase the boy climbs; a violet thumbprint marks where the father cannot sign, and the pull-back reveals the stairs are his bent back.

How it was made

Sujal recorded the voice himself, on his phone, in Tamil; there is no AI voice. The picture was drawn in code with Claude, in the One-line Drawing style of the Lemo-Opuscar film library, on one PC above our shop in Vaniyambadi.
