ஒரு சொல், இரு பொருள் · Kannu
கண்ணு: அம்மா கூப்பிட்ட கண்ணு, இப்போ நான்தான் அவங்க கண்ணு
"Kannu" (கண்ணு) is everyday Tamil for கண், the eye. It is also what Tamil mothers call a child they love: "en kannu", my dear, my precious. In Sujal’s film amma called her son kannu; now her sight is failing, he threads her needle and holds her hand at the road, and he has become her kannu.

In English
"Kannu" has two meanings in Tamil. Both were given to me by amma. One… the eye you see with. Two… the love in calling me "kannu" (my dear). When I was little, amma always called me "kannu". Now her own eyes don't see well. She can't even thread a needle. I threaded it for her. When we crossed the road, I held her hand too. She used to call me her "kannu". Now I am her eyes.
What the film shows
The two meanings become amma's spectacles; THEN young amma calls the boy kannu, NOW her sight blurs and the thread misses the needle until he threads it and holds her hand at a zebra crossing, one red thread through both.
How it was made
Sujal recorded the voice himself, on his phone, in Tamil; there is no AI voice. The picture was drawn in code with Claude, in the Watercolour Brush style of the Lemo-Opuscar film library, on one PC above our shop in Vaniyambadi.
